But grow…
The following is written on the tomb of an Anglican bishop in the crypts of the Westminster Abbey.
When I was young and free my imagination had no limits, I dreamed of changing the world. As I grew older and wiser, I discovered the world would not change, so I shortened my sights somewhat and decided to change only my country. But it, too, seemed immovable. As I grew in my twilight years, in one last desperate attempt, I settled for changing only my family, those closest to me, but alas, they would have none of it. And now as I lie on my deathbed, I suddenly realized: If I had only changed my self first, then by example I would have changed my family. From their inspiration and encouragement, I would have then been able to better my country and, who knows, I may have even changed the world.
There is much that I would not agree with doctrianlly in the Anglican belief system, however, this tomb really has summed up what I have been learning this past week. We are always growing. No matter what stage in life, God wants us to grow and change so that we can do more for His glory. The minute we stop growing is the minute our effectiveness has peaked for God.
2 Peter 3:18-But grow in grace, and in the knowledge of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ. To him be glory both now and for ever. Amen.
That’s a good reminder, thanks for posting!
One of the most powerful truth of the Bible is to be self governed. Not to control others but to control our self. And as we are controlled by the spirit, our influence grows (not our control) 2Ti 3:17 That the man of God may be perfect, throughly furnished unto all good works. — this really is a great reminded that as tempting as it is to try to change every one else or goal should be personal growth and then maybe through our example we can make a difference.
